Water spraying from a joint in a supply pipe

When it can’t wait until morning

Most plumbing emergencies are one of three things: water you can’t stop, water coming back up a drain, or water somewhere it shouldn’t be, like through a ceiling.

Each gets worse by the minute, so the call is answered 24/7, and you’ll be told on the phone how to stop it getting worse while you wait.

Once the immediate problem is fixed, you’ll hear what caused it and whether something like a backwater valve or sump pump would stop it happening again.

While you wait

The first five minutes

What you do before the plumber arrives can save a floor, a ceiling, or a finished basement.

  1. Water coming from a pipe or fixture

Shut off the main water valve. It’s usually in the basement on the front wall, near the water meter. Turn it clockwise.

  2. Water coming up a drain

Stop using water in the house: no flushing, laundry, dishwasher or showers. Everything you run adds to the backup.

  3. Water near outlets or the panel

Stay out of the water and call your electricity utility first. Then move valuables and take photos for your insurer.

Questions homeowners ask

Is this an emergency, or can it wait until morning?

Call right away for water you can’t stop, sewage backing up, water near electrical, or a flooding basement. A dripping faucet or one slow drain can usually wait for a same-day visit.

Where is my main water shut-off?

In most Toronto houses it is in the basement on the front wall, where the water service comes in, close to the water meter. Turn it clockwise to close it. If it won’t move, don’t force it. Say so on the call.

Will my insurance cover it?

That depends on your policy and the cause. Take photos before cleaning up, keep damaged items until your adjuster has seen them, and keep the invoice, which will describe what failed.

How do I stop a sewer backup from happening again?

If water came up through a floor drain during heavy rain, a backwater valve is the usual answer. If it was groundwater, a sump pump may be.
